Stretching is a crucial part of exercise. Failing to stretch - TopicsExpress

Stretching is a crucial part of exercise. Failing to stretch before embarking in any physical activity could seriously harm your muscles. There is really no need to forego the stretching portion of a routine. You only need about 5 to 10 minutes to get your muscles ready for a workout. The most common stretching exercise is called a static method. This is where you slowly push a muscle to the end of the range-of-motion. Each stretch should be held for about 15 to 20 seconds. You should feel a pulling sensation, but not sharp pain. The following are a few basic stretches you can do. * Calf stretch-stand a couple feet away from a wall and lean forward with your upper body until your shoulders touch the wall. * Anterior thigh-stand behind a chair and hold on to it with your left hand for support. Use your other hand to bring your right heel as close to your bottom as possible. Do the same for the other side. * Inner thigh-sit on the floor and bring your heels together while pressing your knees towards the ground. Posterior thigh-sit on a bench with your right leg extended and your left foot flat on the ground. Reach forward to touch your toes. Switch to do the opposite side.
