Strike update: unblabour.ca/ AUNBT is seeking a 26% salary increase over four years which would add $45 million to the university’s $179 million operating budget. In the absence of new funding, we would need to reduce the number of faculty and staff and possibly programs at the university to meet the faculty’s salary increases. The other option, which is also counter-productive is for the university to significantly increase tuition. None of these options make sense in an environment of demographic decline, constraints on government funds and weak economic environment. Increasing faculty salaries to the degree AUNBT is seeking would not advance quality, however it would significantly jeopardize the university’s financial sustainability.
