Striking similarity between life of Gajanan Maharaj ( Shegaon) and Swami Nityananda During his early days, Nityananda Swamiji used to travel by Rail a lot between Mangalore and Kanhangad. Once in a train at Manjeshwar Railway Station the Ticket Checker asked Nityananda to show his ticket. Nityananda did not show the ticket and was forced to get off the train by the newly appointed official forcibly by pushing him out of the train. Nityananda surrendered to the diktats of the official and sat on the bench at Manjeshwar Railway Station. When it was time for the train to depart, it just would not start. Some of the passengers recognising Nityananda approached the Railway officials and pleaded with them that Nityananda should not have been so harshly treated as he was not an ordinary soul but a great spiritual yogi and be allowed to travel. Some devotees then took Nityananada on board and within minutes the train steamed off. When it reached Kanhangad, the train moved few yards away from the station and actually stopped where the current Kanhangad Ashram is located today. When Nityananda descended, he was wearing a garland of hundreds of railway tickets of different classes – I , II, III class ! He handed over the same garland to the Railway official who held his head down in shame and guilt for having treated this great saint so badly and sought pardon. He confessed he was new to the job and did not recognise His greatness. Nityananda nodded and ran in to a patch forest. The train again did not move for some time. Again the devotees ran after Nityananda imploring and pleading for Him to allow the train to start. Nityananda retraced his steps, went to the Railway engine and slapped it. In a few seconds the train was in motion again but went back to the Railway station it had originally passed! Perhaps because of such incidents he became a popular and regular traveller by trains and would often be seated in the Motorman’s or engine driver’s cabin. Till recently some old time drivers still blow a saluting whistle as they pass the Kanhangad Ashram.
