Apply for participation in the first South African Socionext Social Entrepreneurship Challenge - proudly presented by the national bursary organisation Studietrust (studietrust.org.za ) and Zazida Institute of Entrepreneurship (zazida.org). The Challenge will be launched in Johannesburg on International Youth Day (12 August) and continue until 30 November 2013. Do you have a pioneering, creative spirit that will thrive during an innovative social entrepreneurship action-learning program? The Socionext Entrepreneurship Challenge (socionext.org) is designed for multi-talented young people with a social vision and a strong personal drive. Unconventional teaching methods supported by professional coaching will unleash potentially hidden talents not normally addressed in study halls. This program will enhance your practical business skills, test and enhance your leadership ability, broaden your horizon and expand your social and professional networks. By learning to apply new media marketing, network activation, presentation techniques and team management strategies, you will strengthen your resume, boost your career opportunities and teach you how to set up your own business. The Challenge A maximum of 25 applicants will be selected to participate in the Challenge. The successful applicants will form a number of teams. Each team will complete a marketing and a business plan based upon crowd funding, the creation of an event or the delivery of a product or service. Teams compete to determine who can mobilize the most supporters and generate the most income. 50% of the profit of each team will be used for scholarships for young talented people in South Africa. The remaining 50% will be kept by the team as a reward. The learning goals focus on providing you with the skills needed to successfully initiate social entrepreneurship projects. An enriching experience The Socionext Challenge also creates opportunities for networking with young people in Europe who will simultaneously participate in Socionext Challenges in the Netherlands and Denmark. Video-conferencing and other media will connect you to students in Amsterdam and Copenhagen. You will help to empower your peers to develop their skills and impact positively on their environment, while you will be enriched and empowered by your interaction with them. Coaching Socionext coaches are selected on the basis of their life and professional experience and personal charisma. The Socionext Challenge provides a unique opportunity to be coached by experienced professionals from a variety of fields while you are engaged in developing your skills, project and life goals. A fun closing event The closing event for the teams and all of their supporters will reflect the spirit of Socionext. It will combine TED and Pecha Kucha-like presentations with music, art and dance to create a fun and inspirational atmosphere that celebrates social entrepreneurship and the sense of community created through it. Through a web-video link-up, your European peers will become part of the event. Enrolment and Selection Criteria Young people between the ages of 20 and 28 based in Gauteng are invited to apply for participation in the Socionext Challenge 2013. Enrolment will take place via Studietrust. Applicants are required to complete and submit an online application form that will tell us about yourself, your proven experience with income generating projects and your community involvement. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed before the final participants will be announced. The decision of the selectors will be final. The Challenge format and location An intensive 10-day program starting on 12 August 2013 (International Youth Day) with regular plenary sessions and workshops will kick off the Challenge. This “boot camp” will be followed by bi-weekly meetings (2-3 hours) over a period of 8-10 weeks. In addition, teams will be expected to work independently for at least 12-20 hours per week or as long as it takes to design and implement the team projects. Each team will have access to regular meetings with professional coaches on at least 6 occasions. Participants will receive a thorough theoretical grounding, be exposed to a real-world experience of conceptualising, designing and implementing an income-generating project, have an opportunity to build a professional network, become part of an exciting and pioneering community and make a positive contribution to society. After completing the program, participants will be encouraged to remain involved in Socionext activities and other initiatives of the partners. The Socionext Challenge will be held in Auckland Park and Braamfontein, Johannesburg. Cost The cost of participation in the Socionext Challenge is R10,000 per person. However, through contribution of generous sponsors, applicants may be sponsored to the amount of R9,500. Sponsored participants will thus only pay R500 per person. Sponsorships will depend on the submission of the necessary document needed for a means test to determine financial need. Closing date for Applications Applications for participation in the First South African Socionext Challenge must be submitted before midnight on 31 July 2013.
