Subject: Responsibility Since none of you are exactly scrambling to write this month, I guess that as moderator of this page it’s my... well responsibility to do so. Do I want to do it? No, not really. Not at all actually. I’d rather do what I always do on Sundays, because I know how to do that. I don’t know how to write about responsibility, and I don’t like doing things I don’t know how to do - it makes me feel inadequate. One thing I do know however, is that writing has always helped me understand myself and my world better, so I guess that no words are ever really wasted. They are like little particles of oxygen, floating around us; they might not always get used, but they are always there if we need them. I thought about responsibility the other day when I was watching a film about swapped infants. I thought about the big responsibility it is to have children, and how, no matter what we think we’re seeing in other families, we can’t always be sure about what’s good and bad, right and wrong. Just because a child wears dirty clothes and comes to school only when his mum can bring herself to get out of bed, doesn’t mean he’s not loved, respected and cared for. And just because another child has done her homework, smiles on cue and has no bruises, doesn’t mean there is no violence going on. Choosing to have and take care of children is the biggest responsibility there is. Neglecting, mistreating, regretting or trying to pretend you don’t have them will come back to bite you. Now, has anyone got something a bit more lighthearted to say about responsibility? Please?
