It began with Sati Sulochana, the first Kannada talkie, which was released on 3 March 1934. From its difficult days in the beginning, Kannada cinema has now grown to serve a market that sees about 125 feature film releases every year. The climb has been hard but exciting and many real heroes and heroines, off- and on-screen, have contributed to it. Suchitra believes that in the wake of the 100-year celebrations of Indian cinema, this is a good point to stop, take a breath and look back. Even more to the point, it is a time to look forward. Suchitra is happy to invite to you to participate in a day-long programme on Saturday, 26 April to remember the past, listen to views on the current state of our cinema, think about the future and exchange views with cinema practitioners and experts. Her writings on cinema have been featured in many publications in India and abroad, including Cahiers du Cinema (France), Sight and Sound (UK), Film Comment and India Abroad (US). She won the National Award for Best Film Critic and was presented the Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus Award),1998. Bharathi Vishnuvardhan, Indian actress who has performed in Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu language films. She was most seen as a leading actress in the Kannada film industry during the late 1960s to 1980s. Besides these languages, she also featured in Marathi films. Dr. Jayamala, Kannada (Indian) film actress. Her famous films are Giri Kanye, Shankar Guru, Thaayi Saheba..to name a few. Her film Thaayi Saheba won the National award in 1997, which she produced and acted. She was also the Ex-President of Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce. KCN Kumar: Distributor and Producer in Kannada film industry. Sumana Kittur, one of the few Woman filmmakers in Kannada film industry. Her debut film Slum bala as a director was appreciated and loved by the people very much. Her last film Edegarike also proved successful and is featured in many film festivals. Suresh, Suresh, known in the fraternity as “Mars Suresh”, after his company Mars Distributors, is a former vice-president of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), the apex body of Kannada cinema. CV Kumar is an Indian Tamil film producer, who heads the production studio Thirukumaran Entertainment. Noted for his innovative promotions and marketing, Kumar has also primarily introduced new talent into the film industry in terms of actors and technicians. Pawan Kumar is a film director, actor and screenwriter in the Kannada film industry. He is well known for the films Manasaare, Pancharangi, his directorial debut Lifeu Ishtene and the 2013 psychological thriller Lucia. Phani Eggone is the co-founder of Firefly Creative Studio, the go-to studio for high-end CGI(Computed Generated Imaging). Phani was also a finalist at the British Council’s Young Screen Entrepreneur Awards, 2011.SOme of their projects include ANAGANAGA O DHEERUDU, ROBOT, MAGADHEERA, GAALIPATA, ARUNDHATI and many others K.M. Chaitanya , film director, documentary maker and theater person. His first feature film Aa dinagalu in Kannada, won several awards including the Filmfare Awards South for Best Director and Best Feature Film in 2007. Curator and Moderator TS Nagabharana is an Indian theatre and film director, in the Kannada film industry and one of the pioneers of the Parallel Cinema. He is one of the few film directors to have straddled both the mainstream as well as parallel cinema worlds. He has achieved success both in Television and Cinema He has been the recipient of international, national, state and other awards for 20 of his 34 Kannada movies in the last 35 years. Moderator Prakash Belawadi is a theatre, film, television and media personality in Bangalore, India. He is an actor, writer, director and instructor working for the stage and screen. His debut film feature STUMBLE won the National Award in 2003 for Best Film in the regional language (English).
