Sugarcane farmers in Migori County have raised fear over collapse - TopicsExpress

Sugarcane farmers in Migori County have raised fear over collapse of government owned Sony Sugar millers over influx of illegal cheap sugar. Sony workers and transporters are now planning to convene a meeting in Awendo town today to pressure the government through Kenya Sugar Board to release Sh400million subsidy to the miller. Polycarp Atinga, county executive member of Environment and a sugarcane farmer and transporter said they have severally approached the government to pay the subsidy to save the miller to no avail. Speaking to the press today, Atinga said that illegal sugar imports are using the porous border of Kenya and Tanzania to bring in sugar which has flooded the local market. Stakeholders said that if the issue is not resolved quickly the company which started milling in 1976 may be forced to fold up.
