Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program –we would like to thank you once again and encourage you to tell your current students that the online application for SURF 2015 is currently open at med.uc.edu/SURF We are also writing to invite you and any of your students you may wish to bring, to our Biomedical Research Day on Tuesday, January 6th, which will feature an exciting public lecture, entitled “New Opportunities in Biomedical Science from the Perspective of Cancer Research”, by David Plas, PhD, Associate Professor of Cancer Biology at UC. Dr. Plas is a well-known researcher working to uncover new ways to induce cancer cell death. Biomedical Research Day is designed to appeal to students who may be interested in advanced education or careers in biomedical sciences. Prior to the lecture, there will be a graduate fair, where students can meet representatives of our graduate programs at UC COM and Cincinnati Children’s and speak with some of our best student researchers. After the lecture, we will have a number of demonstration sessions, including our special BSL-3 biocontainment labs, a neuroscience imaging facility and a pluripotent stem cell facility. Tour interest can be indicated during event registration at the link below. We also have designed a special workshop for teachers that we hope will be useful for you – Dr. Robert Brackenbury & Dr. Jarek Meller will provide lesson plans that show how students can use online genomics data and software tools to create molecular signatures for classifying breast cancers into clinically-relevant subtypes. We designed these exercises to be simple but exciting ways to introduce students to basic bioinformatics concepts and some of the powerful online resources that are available. Register Here. If you sign up in advance, we will be happy to provide a free lunch from 12:00PM until the start of the lecture. (Registration is not required, but we do need anyone who would like lunch to indicate their plans in advance by registering). More Information: Here is a link to download a flyer that advertises the event, as well as a brochure with more details. With best wishes for the holiday season, we hope to welcome you to the College of Medicine in the New Year!
