Support the cause at Kickstarter. Manileños is a documentary film that explores the lives of several Filipino street artists and what their work says about their worlds. The Filipino Street Art Project - background While the battle to differentiate street art from vandalism still wages, more and more people are warming up to this art form that adds color and provokes thought in the world’s densest city - Manila, Philippines. But in this quickly developing nation, the street art scene is doing more than beautifying a chaotic urban space; it’s becoming an outlet for young, educated voices speaking out against corruption and human rights abuses, discussing the country’s complex identity, and pushing back on the perception of the Philippines as a third world country. While most Westerners dont know much about the Philippines, economists certainly do: it’s predicted to be the 6th fastest growing economy in the world over the next 30 years, and in 2013, outpaced even China as the fastest growing economy in Asia. This unprecedented growth is causing many social and political issues that have festered under a historically corrupt government to come to a head. As the country is preparing to step onto the international playing field, the street art scene is coming of age and artists are taking on these issues in their work. The street artists we work with now have the chance not only to make their voices heard, but to make a real and lasting impact on the ways that Filipinos themselves — and the rest of world — view the Philippines. Starting with these artists’ stories, the Filipino Street Art Project works across many forms of media to document the street art scene and its growth, use art as a way to spark discussions about larger, often global issues, and give these incredible artists the What anchors our project is what we’re here raising money to finish - a feature length documentary film titled Manileños. Through the lens of several Filipino street artists and their work, we want to introduce Manila, the capital of one of the worlds’ fastest growing countries, to the world. On the ground level, the film looks at the experiences of several artists - including Brian Barrios, Dee Jae Paeste, Gerilya, and Lee Salvador - as artists and as young Filipinos. Manileños also asks viewers to consider the role of public art in developing countries, and celebrates the power of street art to express, inspire, and unite -- regardless of where its found. When finished and publicly available, Manileños will attract new supporters, engage with diverse audiences, and act as the focal point for the Filipino Street Art Project. Itll be entertaining, emotional, and hopefully inspiring. Our goal - $15,000 Our contributions Weve happily invested thousands of our own money and hundreds upon hundreds of hours into this. The Filipino Street Art Project has been forefront in our lives for over two years - ask our friends and family :) - and has taken on a life of its own. We believe in Manileños with all of our hearts, and we have and will continue to put all of ourselves into it. The funds were seeking are for services that are essential for a strong documentary film yet outside our skill sets. Why we need you To make this film possible, we need to raise $15,000 to finish filming in Manila and pay for post production - well edit, but we need funds for graphics, color correction, and sound mixing. Were also budgeting for marketing and promotion so we can enter film festivals, create promo materials, and do what it takes to get our film out there for the world to see. Budget: $3250 - travel and 2 weeks in Manila to finish the final 25% of filming $7500 - post production $2000 - Kickstarter fees and reward fulfillment $1000 - community engagement, outreach, and promo materials $750 - festival fees and screening copies $500 - 1st round of DVD duplication Total: $15,000 How were keeping costs down: As filmmakers with over 4 years of experience making documentaries, our team is able to do this project on a microbudget by doing much of the work ourselves. We shot approximately 80% of the footage to date with our own equipment and have edited using professional software and hardware that we own. This dramatically cuts both production and post production costs. We also do all of our own social media management, marketing, promotional events, community outreach, and much, much more, and invest all money from merchandise sales and campus engagement events back into the project.
