Surah Kahaf Abu Sa’eed Al Khudri (radi Allahu anhu) says that Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Whoever reads Surah Kahaf, on the Day of Reckoning he will have noor (light) from his place until Makkah; and whoever reads the last ten verses of Surah Kahaf and Dajjal comes out, will not be harmed by Dajjal; and whoever makes Wudhu then says, ‘Subhanakallaa humma wa bi Hamdika, Ashhadu an laa Ilaaha illa anta, Astaghfiruka wa Atubu ilaik,’ these words will be written on a piece of paper and thereafter sealed up, and this seal will not be broken until the Day of Reckoning.” [Nasaai] This hadith tells us of two of the virtues of Surah Kahaf. One is that the people who recite it will have light with them on the Day of Resurrection, while those without light will be in pitch darkness. The other advantage is of reciting the last ten ayaat of Surah Kahaf. A variant of this hadith in Sahih Muslim states that it is the first ten ayaat that protect against the Dajjal. Should a person acquaint himself or herself with what Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) warned regarding the evil of the Dajjal, he or she would not fail to make a habit of reciting these ayaat daily to save themselves from the fitnah of Dajjal. When Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) informs us of the virtues of certain parts of the Quran, He is drawing our attention to them for a reason. Therefore, all of us should acquaint ourselves with the meaning of what we recite, so that our repeated recitation isn’t just a vocal exercise, but also a reminder of the content of that part of the Quran. Although recitation of the Quran even without understanding (the meaning) is meritorious; only if we understand what we read can we reap the much greater reward of purifying our eeman and applying the teachings of the Quran to our lives.
