Surrey: Addiscombe Club Ride including Box Hill - 20.07.2013 As Toks wasn’t with the team for training this week, Jennie has ably stepped into his blogging shoes! ‘The weekend began meeting Toks and Ana on Friday afternoon to catch up with Ana on how her knee is healing. She was still limping and I got the chance to prove that my lap is a useful leg rest for a damaged knee. After our cake and catch up, we said our goodbyes and walked – very slowly - to the bus stop. My question to Ana of Is this really your top speed?’ was met with a look which clearly meant she was going as fast as she could! Get well soon Ana. We miss you on our rides. On Saturday, Brendy did not join us as his knee is playing up and so he decided let it rest. He kindly lent his bike to Fra, for him to come and experience the Surrey lanes and the joy of Box Hill with gears, rather than having to try it on his single speed. This week Stephanie, who has also signed up for the ride in September, was joining us. So, off Fra and I set to Brixton to meet Toks. He was running late, so we continued up Brixton Hill knowing he would catch us easily. Before we knew it he had caught us and we were all on our way to Coulsdon to meet the others and begin our 50 miles around Surrey. After riding steadily to Coulsdon and the now obligatory pit stop to stock up on food and drinks for the ride ahead, Toks left us to be put through his paces and ride with the ‘fast group’. We met up with Stephanie and the three of us joined the more sensible, slower group. We began really well, taking a steady pace up the Reigate steps, and before we knew it we were at our first rest stop, having a quick break before setting off toward the cafe. The group stayed together until a hill, where a breakaway group found the speed button and pressed it. All those weeks of having Toks shouting at me / encouraging me is having an effect! He wasn’t even there and I could hear him telling me to not let them get away, so off I set to try and catch them, leaving Fra to encourage Steph up the hill. They were fast! Just as I thought I had no chance, a timely horse halted them for just long enough for me to pull alongside. Phew! We continued to the cafe where we were reunited with a fresh looking Toks (they clearly weren’t pushing him hard enough) for snack bars and cold drinks, well deserved by all. After a short pit stop we set off for Box Hill. Toks went back to the fast group, while Stephanie, Fra and I remained in the sensible group. We all made good time to Box Hill and at the bottom, took our own pace to the top. By the time we got to the top, Toks had made such good time, he was already half way back to London. We enjoyed some ice cold lemonade and cake before beginning our return journey. The clouds overhead made for a much more pleasant ride than the previous week and before we knew it we were back at the Coulsdon cafe, feeling great after a good cycle. Miles: 73 Average – approx 14.5mph Please sponsor the team! justgiving/Peach-All-Stars
