Sustenance from Heaven The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “If he had left it to itself the millstone would have circled on and on till the Day of Resurrection or kept on grinding the flour (which would never have exhausted.” [Tabarani] The story behind this hadith is that there was once a pious couple who was very needy and lived a life of destitution. But the couple was blessed with faith and trust in Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). Extreme hunger forced the husband to go out into the desert and look for food while his wife turned to Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) in this terrible predicament, as He alone is the support of those who have no one to lean on. She prayed to Him saying, “O Allah, grant us what we may knead into bread.” When the husband returned home, he observed an amazing scene. There was a vessel full of flour and the millstone filled with wheat was grinding it into flour, while the oven was roasting fresh meat. He asked his wife in amazement, “Where did all this come from?” She said, “This is from the provision of Allah.” The man then started to sweep the place around the millstone with a broom. The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) revealed to us that if he had not swept the particles around the millstone, it would have continued to grind in that manner until the Day of Resurrection. [Tabarani; Bayhaqi; Ahmad] Some people refuse to believe in such events saying that they do not measure up to man’s knowledge of how things work. Unfortunately, we have blind faith in what scientists say but not in what Prophets tell us. Denial of such cases which are confirmed in Ahadith is tantamount to denial of Hadith and denial of Allah’s powers. Man is dependent on means, but Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) is not dependent on anything. In fact the means too, are created by Him. He is the Lord of the worlds and He nourishes His slaves by any means He chooses, with or without known agencies. This Hadith also confirms that Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) helps His pious slaves and provides them their livelihood. Unusual occurrences may occur for them, but it happens for them according to Allah’s will and not on their demand. Finally, this Hadith also tells us to refrain from putting a stop to the unexpected blessings of Allah or to show ungratefulness for them. A similar miracle occurred in the Battle of Ahzab/Trench at the hands of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam). The food prepared by Jabir (radi Allahu anhu), though little, was made sufficient for a large army. Here, too, the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) had said to Jabir (radi Allahu anhu), “Do not open the vessel until I come.” Then he poured out the broth with his own hands but he would cover the utensil again after taking out each person’s broth and bread. We should not try to investigate into the unseen help from Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) but have faith in His help and His blessings.
