SyFys new mini-series Ascension has turned out to be pretty good - TopicsExpress

SyFys new mini-series Ascension has turned out to be pretty good with a very interesting premise (just finished EP 2 of 3). However, there have been some glaring technical gaffs... *** WARNING: POTENTIAL SPOILERS BELOW *** For example - The Ascension was allegedly launched in 1963 and was created using the technology of the time, and since then they have not had access to any future technological advances other than those they have made themselves. In EP 2, one of the crew members of Ascension builds a bomb with a timer. The timer on the bomb was a digital moulded plastic 4-digit 7-segment LED display with green segment colors. However, the first true LED was not invented until 1961, with the first visible spectrum LEDs created in 1962. During the mid to late 60s, visible spectrum LEDs only came in red and were extremely low power, and any used to display numbers in calculators were so dim and small they had to be encapsulated in plastic lenses. Commercial production of LEDs (and still only in red) wasnt started until 1968. The 7-Segment LED displays that are familiar today were not invented until the 1970s, with brighter, multi-digit versions in colors other than red (as used on the bombs timer) not being made until the mid to late 1970s into the early 80s. Yeah, I know Im nit-picking, but thats what being a Sci-Fi and electronics nerd is all about. :)
