TAKE ACTION: Sign our petition to ask the Greenwich Board of Selectmen to join with Mayors Against Illegal Guns. Send your name and address to us via a Facebook message, or come by our table at the Greenwich Sidewalk Sales July 13 and 14 from 11am-3pm, near 278 Greenwich Ave. WHEREAS, a substantial majority of Connecticut voters, across party lines, support common-sense gun regulation: • 93 percent support universal background checks, including 89 percent among voters in households with guns • 72 percent back registration of all handguns, with annual renewal • 63 percent, including 50 percent among gun owners, favor limiting handgun purchases to one per month WHEREAS, the Sandy Hook shooting that took the lives of 26 children and educators occurred in a community much like ours, and we feel a moral obligation to demonstrate our solidarity with Newtown; WHEREAS, 18 mayors of Connecticut cities and towns—including those of Stamford and Norwalk—have already joined Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the bipartisan coalition of mayors working to make America’s communities safer by keeping illegal guns out of dangerous hands; WHEREAS, even Greenwich is not immune from the threat of gun violence, considering that: • Greenwich High School was locked down in May when a student claimed he brought a gun to school • Shots were fired in a drive-by shooting on Indian Field Road last year WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, therefore call on the Greenwich Board of Selectman to join and support the efforts of Mayors Against Illegal Guns by signing and returning its Statement of Principles which outlines policy measures that will reduce death and injury caused by illegal guns.
