TBT, today my niece asked me to tell her a story so this is for her. Not long ago, when I was a young girl, every Sunday after church my mom and dad would pack all seven of us (me and four siblings and my parents) into their station wagon car and we would make the long drive to our Grand Parents house. You know, that hours drive from Eubank and I-40 to Edith and Indian School. at least it seemed like a long ride then. I adored my grandparents, Porfie and Eva Martinez. Grandma always had beans warming on the stove and fresh tortillas, they were so good. My Grandpa always had a stash of cookies or that Christmas Ribbon candy, by mid summer all the pieces were always stuck together but we didnt care! Sometimes our cousins would be visiting too and wed run off to play in the cemetery across from their house. Often there were 15-20 people in this little four room house with thick adobe walls. Inside this little house it was always cool in the summer heat and warm in the winter. My grandmother always had Jergens lotion, you know that one that smells like cherry almonds, and a jar of Ponds Face cream on her bathroom shelf.
