TEXAS PEEPS! It has been just over a decade since I have visited the Great State of, and I could not be more thrilled by the reason for my return. The in/famous and in/sanely talented Rex Paul Schnelle, whom I met only months after moving to Texas in 1988, who is one of a small handful of musicians capable of recruiting his own guitar heroes (Phil Keaggy, Dann Huff, and Eric Johnson, to name but a few) to guest star on his self-produced solo album, has gathered a fantastic drummer named David Burch and myself to play a few special, select shows in his beloved hometown, Marble Falls (just outside of Austin), for the FiestaJam event next weekend. We will be performing difficult and beautiful songs by artists like Kings X, Eric Johnson, Toy Matinee, and even Elton John, as a power trio with impossibly high standards, along with some of Rexs very best original music. It is going to be incredibly special to bring this project to the place where it all started for Rex (and in many ways, for me as well), and if youre a fan of The Real Thing, you are not going to want to miss these shows. But selfishly, I am formally requesting that my dear Texas friends (and family, Randall!) I havent seen in at least a decade, please try to come see us so I can hug your neck after the show. The schedule will be pretty packed and we wont have a way to get around, so I wont be able to do what I did in 2004 and drive around crashing with various friends for an evening or two. And you havent seen me play or sing in at least 15 years, even though Ive been playing non-stop since I moved to TN, and Im way better at it now than I ever was back then!
