TFGA welcomes orchard and vineyard expansion incentives TFGA Media Release The Tasmanian farmers and Graziers Association (TFGA) today welcomed the state government’s second round of financial incentives to increase the area of land committed to orchards and vineyards. The government announced the guidelines today for the second round of loan interest rebates. It has the lion’s share, $900,000, of a total $1.2 million package. Under the program, people can apply for interest rebates for the first three years of the establishment of new orchards and vineyards. “A strength of Tasmanian farmers is their willingness to think outside the square,” TFGA chief executive Jan Davis said. “For most of them, scale is not an option so they have developed sophisticated, diversified enterprises as a means of risk management.” Ms Davis said the government’s program to increase the acreage of vineyards and orchards here would assist farmers in further diversifying the mix of their farming enterprises. It was like any other form of investment, she said. The more diverse your portfolio the less risk in the overall investment. “It’s called playing to your strengths,” Ms Davis said. “There are long lead-times in establishing fruit and wine businesses. You don’t get returns for perhaps six or seven years. Meanwhile, loans that have established that part of the enterprise have to be repaid.” Contact Jan Davis 0409 004 228
