THANK GOD............ SmallerDefaultLarger Jammu, Sep 16: After remaining closed for 13 days, the traffic movement on vital Jammu–Srinagar highway resumed on Tuesday as over 500 vehicles carrying essential supplies for Kashmir crossed Jawahar tunnel by this evening. Officials said the highway was reopened after the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and Army Engineers restored the fifty meter washed away road patch near Ramsu. They said with the re-opening of the highway much needed supplies to flood hit Kashmir have been restored and over 500 vehicles carrying essential commodities were allowed to move towards the Valley. Talking to Greater Kashmir, Superintendent of Police (Highway) Haseeb Mudgal said that the road was thrown open for all types of vehicles at 7.30 am. He informed that till 4.00 pm around 500 vehicles including heavy trucks loaded with medicines, baby food, ration, fuel, cattle fodder and other essential commodities crossed Jawahar Tunnel besides many Jammu bound standard vehicles were also allowed to move towards Jammu. He said that 75 heavy vehicles including fuel tanks, army convoys, CRPF convoys were sent to Kashmir via Sinthan – Kishtwar road. Meanwhile, the government has drawn a strict traffic plan for the highway ‘In view of the prevailing flood situation in the Kashmir valley and ensure smooth flow of traffic, especially at Gangroo and Higni (Ramsoo). An official spokesperson said the traffic on highway shall strictly ply from one side keeping in view the prevailing flood situation in Kashmir and ensure smooth flow of traffic on the road. Only relief and essential commodities carrying vehicles shall be allowed to ply from Jammu to Srinagar on Sept 16 and Sept 17, while on Sept 18 only passenger vehicle will ply from Srinagar to Jammu. Similarly, for next 2 days i.e. Sept 19 and Sept 20 the traffic would ply from Jammu to Srinagar, the spokesperson said. He said that no extra heavy vehicles including multi-axle vehicles, Trollers and trucks carrying non essential commodities/material shall be allowed to ply on the highway after the situation in flood hit areas gets normal/better. However, LMVs shall be allowed to ply from Jammu to Srinagar through Kishtwar-Sinthantop road without any restriction during this period. Pertinently, the highway was closed on Sept 4 after the road suffered extensive damage due to landslides and sinking of patches at various places including 300 meter stretch near Ramsu area of Ramban district. Hundreds of vehicles had stranded on the route at various places in Banihal, Ramban, Batote, Kud, Patnitop, Chenani, Udhampur and Jammu due to closure of the road.
