THE FINAL WORD Continued... 9. What do you definitely not want your funeral to be? Again, I hear you groan, ‘enough already!’ However, this is not the same as the last question where you got to have fun with some ideas for the final celebration of your life. This is short and sweet but no less important. Because what you don’t want at your funeral is for it to depict who the main mourners are or indeed who they thought you were. Now, I’m not suggesting for one minute that your loved ones will go against your wishes in organising your funeral but if they have no idea what you will want or not want, they WILL turn it into a funeral about them! It’s human nature. Of course, they will say things like, ‘Dad would have liked this song because it describes him, even though he hated grunge rock,’ or ‘Mum would have loved everyone wearing pink with orange polka dots, just like her original going away outfit that she’s wearing in her coffin.’ Let them know what you definitely do not want and hopefully they can carry out your wishes. I say ‘hopefully’ because there are some things your loved ones cannot control. For example, you may want people to wear white, so that can be printed on the funeral announcement, but you can’t control the fact that some may choose to wear black. So a list of don’t wants needs to be realistic and SIMPLE. I don’t want a Catholic Mass. I don’t want to be buried. I don’t want a choir. I don’t want an expensive depressing looking coffin.
