THE HOLY QURAN: A HADITH???!!! Some of us will simply refuse to indulge Mualim Daouda Conde in his frivolous pursuit to gain a little bit more popularity at the expense of this impeccable religion--Islam. It is simply vainglorious on his part and its just so sad. The title Hafiz is not conferred on an individual just for the sake of conferring it. It is meritoriously conferred on an individual. One can never be a self-proclaimed hafiz; so, unless my sources are not telling me the truth, then I consider Mualim Daouda Conde a hafiz of the first order. And for him to now begin dismantling the prerequisites for being a hafiz is simply counterintuitive--to say the least; and he could eventually self-destruct. Fortunately for me, I am not an Islamic scholar; so, I will simply not give any credence to his recent rambling just for that additional fifteen-second fame he has begun to crave for in recent times. I thank God that the family fun time I had with my children--especially my daughter, Maryam Konneh--at Chuck E Cheeses upstaged every other thing in my life on Sunday (07/20/2014). Whenever Maryam is around me, my world metaphorically stops revolving and just focuses on her. She is not just the center of my gravity, but truly a sunshine in my life. At times when my day seems gloomy, she brings so much sunshine into it. Few days ago, she took me on a guilt-trip when she said to me, Daddy, you never keep your promise to me--a euphemism for: You keep on lying to me. Thank God for America where an eight-year-old can tell her middle-aged father something like that so easily...without even blinking. So, I asked her, What do you mean, Maryam? because I dont ever remember not keeping my promise to her. And she said, Because…FULL STOP! Does that answer sound familiar to some of you parents of our American children? Then I said, Because…what? She said Because the second time. I asked the same question again. And, while shrugging her shoulder, she said, I dont know. I knew that would be the final answer because weve been down that line of questions-and-answers several times before. Anyway, the point Im trying to make is that I had promised Maryam that I was taking her to Chuck E Cheeses on Sunday; and there was no way in this world that I was going to renege on that promise unless it was due to some extraordinary reasons well beyond my control. God bless my future son-in-law, because Maryam is very good at getting what she wants. She is remarkably persuasive for her age. Boy-o-boy, my kids and had real fun at Chuck e Cheese’s on Sunday. Back to the Daoude Conde versus our Islamic scholars’ debate. I still don’t believe that I read Brother Manyou’s narrative concerning the debate right. Did someone actually say that the Holy Qur’an is a hadith? When I read it, all I could say was: Astaghfrillahi (Allah! Forgive). And that Mualim Dauda Conde would concur with that assertion was even more baffling, because the Holy Qur’an is simply not a hadith—NO WAY!!! Unless we don’t know the etymology of the two Arabic words, it’s no way we can call the Holy Qur’an a hadith. The word “Qur’an” is a derivative of the Arabic word “Iqra’a”, which means, “Recite”. And “hadith” literally means: “Narration” in Arabic. While the Qur’an is literally Almighty Allah (Soobhana Wa Ta’llah/SWT) telling Prophet Muhammad (Sallalaho Alaihim Wassalam/SAW) to recite His Guidance and Commands to the worlds, the hadith (plural: ahadith) is a narration of what the Prophet (SAW) did or did not do based on eyewitness accounts as well as hearsays. The two can never be one and the same. Throughout the Holy Qur’an, you hear Almighty Allah (SWT) telling Prophet Muhammad (SAW): “Say…;” whereas most of the ahadith begin with: “According to…” or “I heard or saw the Prophet…” or “I heard so-so-and-so person say….” Therefore, there can be no Commutative Property relationship between the Holy Qur’an and the hadith, because to do so is to say: “The Holy Qur’an is hadith and hadith is the Holy Qur’an”—God forbid! This argument is wrong on so many levels that it would require a complete dissertation to elucidate the point; so, I do believe somebody simply goofed on Sunday by advancing such an argument; but if, and only if, they said it in the manner in which it was reported by my dearest brother, Manyou. And this is what happens when we engage in these kinds of debate. Nonetheless, I doff my hat to our esteemed Islamic scholars, who, while some of them may not necessarily be huffaz (plural of hafiz), had the guts to take on an illustrious hafiz in person of Mualim Dauoda Conde. Maybe if we stick to the main points of such debates in the future, we could avoid these slips. May Almighty Allah (SWT) continue to bless all of us and grant us the wisdom to try to understand His Word! Thank you all very much and take care. Faliku K. Konneh, II, A.
