THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY Its not unusual for me to have a different take on certain films than many of my peers. I have read nothing but the very highest praises from said peers this past week for Disneys The Hundred-Foot Journey, starring Helen Mirren. We saw it this afternoon and thought it fell short of deserving such high praise. Dont get me wrong. If you are over 40 and appreciate movies with mature actors and an actual storyline, youll find this to be a charming, enjoyable film; one you probably should go see. You can check out the link Ive provided to see a trailer and read about the plot. What is not revealed, however, is that every twist and turn of the story is completely predictable after the first 15 minutes. It is formulaic to a fault, but the lead actors are talented enough to somehow maintain interest in how they will react to the challenges you know are just around the corner (or, in this case, just across the road). Only 2/3 of the nations film critics recommend seeing this film. This tepidly positive response seemingly fails to account for the warmth and satisfaction it generates, but does reflect the overly-sweet, perfect Disneyfied ending. Go and enjoy it, but just dont expect your mind to be very engaged.
