THE JOURNEY SO FAR Our walk has become so tiresome Like the child with the festering sore Trudging with a limp and a little lonesome With the arid air, the water became sour; The journey so far has become so hopeless Like the thoughtless encounters of the war The shelling, the bombing and the madness Yet, hunger had made the abdomen so raw; The lesson we learnt was never put to its uses Like the farmer refusing the allure of manure After the famine and drought came with losses When the sheep had lost the palate for pasture; The strength of the khaki took away our voices Even when the agbadas came with hope: midway They thwarted with more barrels and their ruses General Sunglasses with tragedy closed our say; The journey so far with turbulence smile arose With suspicion, death and pain in massive tolls Yet, the purveyor of death zombie-like morose Taking lives even as the heavy tomb stones he rolls Terrorism he claims but eternal death he chose; How did we come to be here when Africa we rule? Democracy we claim but all human rights we lack Like the devastating days of Adolf Hitler’s rule When humans are worth only the missiles we stack; Uncle Jona, please help us out: hold us tight rightly Let them say all they can now that night approaches So that when morning comes they’ll not look lightly If done well your feats will surpass all the roaches.
