THE PRESS STATEMENT OF THE ANC YOUTH LEAGUE ON THE READINESS FOR THE PROVINCIAL RALLY TO BE HELD ON THE 27 OCTOBER 2013, IN THE JOHN TAOLO GAETSEWE REGION 24 October 2013. 1. INTRODUCTION The 10 September 2013 marked the 69th anniversary of the formation of the ANC Youth League. The ANC Youth League in the Northern Cape decided to celebrate this historic event in October, in order for it to coincide with the celebrations of OR Tambo month. We do so to give honour to one of the founding members of the ANC Youth League; Oliver Reginald Tambo. He together with Nelson Mandela, Anton Lembede, Mxolisi Majombozi, Walter Sisulu and others; formed the Youth League, and they were instrumental in bringing militancy and fresh energy to the ANC’s struggle for liberation. These stalwarts were responsible for the championing and later implementing the ANC’s Programme of Action, which led to the “real” congress of the people which took place in Kliptown in 1955 and produced the Freedom Charter which became a significant guiding tool during the drafting of our country’s constitution. The Provincial Task Team of the ANC Youth League in the Northern Cape took a decision to reflect on this history and to celebrate the long road that the Youth League has traversed. We will celebrate the historic role played by the Youth League in its 69 years of existence, and also inculcate amongst the younger members a clear historical perspective of why the Youth League was formed and what its role is in the current conjuncture. 2. As the Youth League of the ANC, we wish to commend the ANC in the province for convening a peaceful and united list conference on Monday the 21 October 2013, at Mayibuye Multipurpose Centre in Kimberley. We further applaud the branches of the ANC throughout the province for the manner in which they conducted the branch general meetings (BGMs) in preparation for the Provincial List Conference, and for nominating amongst themselves the best of the best cadres to be deployed to National Parliament, NCOP and the Provincial Legislature. The Youth League was represented in the list committee, and this is received as a sign that the ANC leadership has got confidence in the leaders of the ANCYL. Now that the list conference has come and gone, we are confident that all our cadres will now focus on the elections campaign, to make sure that we reach the 70% victory in the 2014 national general elections, as mandated by the last provincial conference of the ANC in Upington. 5. WISHING THE CLASS OF 2013 LUCK AND ALL THE BEST. The ANC Youth League wishes the best of luck to all the learners who will be sitting for their final matric examinations this year. As the ANCYL we are confident that the education n department in the province has provided all the necessary tools to enable our learners to perform well during the upcoming final examinations. We further believe in our learners and we are confident that they have the ability to make us proud as a province. We urge them to withdraw from all other activities and focus on their studies during this period. They should form study groups so that they can learn with and from each other. We call on all of them to invest their time and energies, to ensure that they achieve top marks in their exams, so that they qualify for university entrance. They are reminded that secondary education is the foundation for a brighter future. The ANC-led government has made many opportunities available that can only be enjoyed through proper education and high levels of skills. 6. OPEN REGISTRATION WEEKEND. We call on all the youth of the province to make use of the first open-registration weekend of the 09th – 10th OCTOBER 2013, to go in their numbers to the voting stations near to where they live, to register in order for them to be able to vote in 2014. The Constitution of the Republic has secured the right of every citizen to decide on the government that must rule the country. This right did not come cheap, it has taken blood, sweat, tears and in some instances death. In the words of our stalwart and former president, Tata Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela; “the youth of this country are our price possession, without them, there is no future”. CONCLUSION. The ANC Youth League is ready and determined to ensure that the ANC in the Northern Cape attains the 70% victory in the province in the upcoming 2014 national general elections. We will pull all stops and leave no stone unturned to make sure that the ANC remains in power in the Northern Cape. We are not intimidated by anything or anyone; we will and must defend the revolutionary gains we made since 1994.
