THE SMILING COOK-A MAN I HATED. As part of corporate social responsibility nyagatugu secondary school used to hire it’s support staff from the local community. One of the greatest beneficially was Simon Mboche Kahuro-a man full of hubris and a mastery of platitudes. The fact that his younger brother was a school board member made him to be a king of impunity. The school had only two cooks who alternated on Wednesdays. He was the village mouthpiece and the link between village and the school grapevine. His food was ever uncooked properly.As a young man his age mates had nicknamed him huni thende due to his casual nature.Woe unto you if you are a local.He was the chief supplier of gossip to all corners of nyagatugu.From mithanga to barara,kiangari to karangini gachogi to kahutiri.Ndari marika.Phew ihad no love lost on him. Once it was leaked that he was a pupil of my grandfather who graduated in 1954 with a BA in political science. Like a parrot he sang the platitude to all corners, and how my grandfather was a thigh monger and a man of the bottle despite his brilliant nature. He loved his wedding ring a lot and he ever displayed it smiling.His other achievement was being the chairman of K.A.M.A-men guild in Anglican church.On retirement, he went back to farming but he used to lead delegates to Nairobi home of the much talked ,narrated and coveted son of nyagatugu-James Njuguna to visit his mother with fellow K.A.M.A members to visit the then james ailing mother and taking giathi to her-Ta gutari kanitha cia Anglican Nairobi.-Extending his love for sycophancy.Once he cooked bad food and students picketed.In the dormitory they started shouting huni thende aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahuni thende.This inflated him a lot. Kaguma Kagema and kuria gakungu became the chief suspects.Today mboche is still strong.Rarely does he miss social occasions in the village.
