THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS SONGS #5) Peace On Earth / The Little Drummer Boy : Bing Crosby & David Bowie (recorded during Bing Crosbys Merrie Ol Christmas Special 1977) Yes, I realize Ive placed The Little Drummer Boy in this survey twice. However, Ive done so for two reasons. First off, I consider this rendition an entirely different song for Peace On Earth was written specifically for Bowie because he didnt want to sing the contemporary version. Second, both versions are beautifully done and each deserve their own place. This version evolved from a skit from Bings last Christmas special. There are a couple of amusing quips during the opening that explore the generation gap between the two men. But there is no denying the two turned out an absolutely brilliant song. The way the words from both songs intertwine with the familiar melody, and the strength in voice when the two join to harmonize at the bridge of the song is timeless. I was informed by my friend Dan that Bing never got to see the finished product for he passed away mere days after recording this. Both he and David Bowie, giants in the same industry in different eras, joining together for one time and producing such an exceptional piece of musicianship from the heart. What a result! Enjoy!
