THERE IS LIFE BEYOND THE GRAVE Normally, death is present in our lives as an ending-yet-to-arrive. With death all pursuits disintegrate, and our self-understanding collapses. At once we are expelled from the sphere of meaning. We are nothing more than a corpse to be buried or a body to be set on fire. It is not simply that we cannot survive our own death; we cannot bear the sight of it. We do not want to die. Not now. And yet the possibility of self-sacrifice suggests that this terror can be overcome, that death can be meaningful. The possibility of self-sacrifice is part of living a meaningful life and exists in the most common of lives though may remain dormant. It’s Holy Week, remembering the death and resurrection of Jesus. That death on Good Friday though brutal was for a cause. He lived beyond Good Friday to Easter and continues to live. Those who live and work for others do not die. There is life beyond the grave for those who sacrifice and offer themselves for the cause of others. There is no reason to be worried about death. There is life beyond the grave. May all our lives be lives of hope! A very happy Easter to all of you.
