THEY WOULD FIND A CURE IF EBOLA CAME TO LONDON First of all I - TopicsExpress

THEY WOULD FIND A CURE IF EBOLA CAME TO LONDON First of all I offer a caveat, these are the opinions of Dr. John Ashton CBE however in his privileged position as President of the UK Faculty of Public Health you would then appreciate these words from his article as food for deep thought; it seems that the involvement of powerless minority groups has contributed to a tardiness of response and a failure to mobilise an adequately resourced international medical response. We must respond to this emergency as if it was in Kensington, Chelsea, and Westminster. And we must get real over economic development. We must also tackle the scandal of the unwillingness of the pharmaceutical industry to invest in research to produce treatments and vaccines, something they refuse to do because the numbers involved are, in their terms, so small and dont justify the investment. These, in my view (besides the critical state of underdevelopment of healthcare systems in affected areas), are the ingredients of the perfect storm that have made this Ebola epidemic an enduring and existential health challenge that will simply not blow over any time soon.
