THOUGHT BALLOON: there are two issues dominating my news feed this morning and both represent two sides of pinoy psyche. The first is the Mayon disaster management and Albay is doing a helluva job in managing thousands of evacuees affected by the volcanos unrest. Unlike in a storm, volcanic unrest is a protracted battle that will test every LGUs capability and resources. The need to balance safety vis-a-vis a state of normalcy in daily living among those in evac centers as well as of the general populace is no easy task. And yet, Albay government is handling the job pretty well.... The other issue raging on social media is the memory of the martial law years with many from the younger generation praising and short of calling a return of the iron hand rule again. It has been 29 years since we broke free from those oppressive years and generations has been born since then with no idea how oppressive, how unjust, how deadly those years were. And people forgot the fact that we can now freely criticize the government nowadays, is a right born out of that fight to be free from the martial law regime. It has been said many times that we Filipinos have short memories and never learns from the past. And while these calls for martial law rule is a step in that direction, Albay has proven otherwise. The province definitely learned from past tragedies and its efficient disaster response and management is a testament is a testament that we are capable of learning... if only we set our minds into it.
