TIP OF THE DAY: For experienced runners, I often promote the benefits of the 3/1 run: where you run easy for the first 3/4 of the (usually long) distance, then pick up the pace in the last 1/4 of your workout. Not a lot, just a bit faster. In other words, if your normal long run pace were 10:00 per mile, run the first 12 miles of a 16-miler at that pace, then come in at 9:00 or 9:30. Not a flat-out sprint, just an uptick in pace.
