TNN on Scene - Residential Fire in the 300 Block of Adams - Shepard only Injury Arson Suspected 2/30/2014 - Todd D. Lederer - Editor Tuesday night at approximately 10:03pm Kern County Fire Officials received a call of a residential fire in the 300 block of Adams Street, Ford City. The cause of the fire is undetermined but Kern County Fire Department Arson officials have told TNN that the origin appears to be suspicious in nature, and started just outside the home and spread inside. It is still under investigation. When Fire Company 21 arrived with two engines, the home was already engaged. The fire was spreading through the attic portion of the structure and 10-15 foot flames were threatening the neighboring home. It took approximately 20 minutes to knock down the blaze. Cathy, the homes only occupant, has lived in the home since 2000, renting from her father, William, who lives in Bakersfield. It was Cathys Grandfather who built the home back in the late 1930s. Cathy also lives in the home with her Australian Shepard, Shadow. Shadow was the only known injury in tonights blaze. She escaped either through an open door or window, but not before getting slightly burned on her leg. She also had some fur singed on her back. Cathy treated her and she should be fine. The resident, Cathy, believes the fire was intentionally set. Cathy told TNN that she was at the store at the time the fire started, but had had an altercation with an unidentified female subject just 5 minutes prior to the blaze. The conflict occurred at the home of a friend, just down Adams street. Due to the suspicious nature of the fire and the residents story, Kern County Sheriffs Deputies have left the case to Arson investigators. At 1:15am, investigators were still on the scene, combing through the area and contacting residents. Arson officials have not determined if an accelerant was used to start the fire, but did collect samples for testing. TNN will bring more information, including the cause, as it becomes available.
