TO BE HONEST © G. J. Olsen Esq 2015 “To be honest” is a phrase that addles me It implies that what has been said before Has been a lie, or at best, disingenuous I don’t want to hear anymore “To be honest” makes no sense to me at all. Why one would ever utter a word Or write a piece that was wasn’t based on veracity? To me that’s quite absurd “To be honest” the vanguard words of an interview Clearly flagging that what comes next It’s meant to reassure, or make a bigger splash But I listen frustrated and vexed “To be honest” betrays the utterer’s inner life That has perhaps for many years Been learning how to veil the truth And we are confirmed in our fears “To be honest” signals to me that whatever was said Is surely now tainted with doubt. How can I trust anyone who utters such a trinity To give what follows more clout? “To be honest”, almost a slogan, “Hey listen to me. I’m laid bare. “I’m just about to deliver to you Exactly what you want to hear”. To be honest, now I’ve caught the bug, But I want to reassure you That what I have written in my poem just now Is really, truly true.
