TO TEAR ONE`S CLOTHES: A custom of the Eastern peoples to express indignation, despair, discontentment, sorrow and bereavement ( Genesis 37:34; Numbers 146; Joshua 7:6; Judges11:35; 2 Samuel 1:11; 2 Kings 5:7; Job 2:12 ). When Jesus confessed who he was during his trial, Caiaphas the Hihg Priest tore his clothes to demonstrate his indignation and condemn Jesus to death ( Mark 14:63 ). By so doing, Caiaphas disobeyed the Law of Moses, which forbids the High Priest from doing such a thing ( leviticus 21:10 ).
