Can I fast the six of shawwal even if I Missed days in Ramadan due - TopicsExpress

Can I fast the six of shawwal even if I Missed days in Ramadan due to valid reasons? Lets Study Fiqh - Islamic Jurisprudence Fasting the Six Days of Shawwal The Prophet s said, “Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days from Shawwal it is as if they fasted the entire year.” (Sahih Muslim) Based on the above hadith the majority of scholars, hanafi, Shafi`i, and Hanbali schools, state that it is recommended to fast six days of the month of Shawwal. It is permitted to fast these six days separately throughout the month, or consecutively, after Eid al-Fitr and they consider it prohibitively disliked (makruh tahriman - hanafis) and sinful to fast on Eid day itself. The Shafi`is and Hanbalis state that it is superior to make the six fasts consecutive. The later Hanafi scholars differed as to which is better, fasting the six days consecutively or non-consecutively, though neither is disliked and both fulfill the sunnah. The reward is equal to having fasted obligatory fasts the entire year days, according many scholars. What about those who Missed fasts due to valid reasons (travel, menstrual etc), are they able to fast the 6 days and the missed days together or do they have to make up the missed ones first and THEN fast the six of Shawwal? There are TWO main scholarly positions:1- That you CANNOT combine two intentions for one act of worship if the intentions are of different categories. The issue here is that making up the fast missed (Qaada) is Wajib/compulsory, while fasting the 6 of Shawwal is sunnah. They are of different levels of intention and some scholars dont accept doing one act of worship with two levels of intention. This is the standard opinion of the Hanbalis. 2- that you CAN combine intentions that are tied together by Zaman (time constraint) or makaan (location). My understanding is that combining the intention is logical and closer to the spirit of the sunnah. The prophet (s) taught simplicity. This second opinion is that of Imam Malik and others from the salaf and to me seems to be the Truth. Repaying the fast - or Qadaah is compulsory on those who had a legal excuse for missing a day or more (sickness, travel etc). I believe that you CAN have more than one intention for fasting a particular day. You can fast tomorrow for example, with the intention of fulfilling the sunnah of the 6 days of Shawaal AND fasting on a MONDAY as the Prophet sala Allahu alihi wasSalaam used to AND make up a missed day - Simultaneously. The scholars who say you should fast the missed days first then do the 6 days, such as Imam Ahmed ibn Hanbals school of thought hold this opinion for the following reasons: They say that since the prophet (s) said the one who fasts RAMADAN - that means you have to make up the missed ones to COMPLETE your ramadan before you can do the six of Shawaal. They use statements from Aisha (r) that she preferred that. This can be countered by the fact, that Ramadan is a month that starts and ends in defined time. The fast you make up after is rewarded on account of Ramadan, but it is NOT ramadan. So if you had a valid excuse and fast ALL the other days then you fall under the generality of those who fasted Ramadan. The Prophet (s) explained this when he said: “Whoever fasts for six days after Eid al-Fitr has completed the year: (whoever does a good deed (hasanah) will have ten hasanah like it).” According to another report: “Allah has made for each hasanah ten like it, so a month is like fasting ten months, and fasting six days completes the year.” (al-Nisaa’i and Ibn Majah and Ibn Khuzaymah with the wording: “Fasting for the month of Ramadaan brings the reward of ten like it, and fasting for six days brings the reward of two months, and that is the fasting of the whole year.” The Hanbali and Shafa’i fuqaha’ explained that fasting six days of Shawaal after fasting Ramadaan makes it as if one has fasted for an entire year of obligatory fasts, because the multiplication of the reward applies EVEN to nafil VOLUNTARY fasts, because each hasanah brings the reward of ten like it. So the Prophet (s) indicates that the 6 days will be reward like the 30 of Ramadan even though they are not the same.So much more that could be said...but in general you can fast with both intentions insha Allah..that seems to be closer to the spirit of the Sunnah of ease. wa Allahu alaam Yahya Adel Ibrahim
