TO THOSE POOR AND IGNORANT LITERATES About a year back, around this time of the year, I was there, crouched into a corner of a room in Bangalore, depressed and thinking about Loyola college; why I could not get there despite a p.c. of 90 while some of my friends got it though I had a higher p.c. My hopes of becoming a physicist were gone and with that the wild dream of winning a Nobel Prize in Physics. But as I look back, I was applying for biophysics. “BIO”… now I am doing B.E. Biotechnology. By this, it does not mean I didn’t like BT from the beginning. Now, I am obsessed with BT. And it hurts to see and get to know how BT and other bio-based subjects except medical line are viewed and treated in India. Most of the people don’t know what BT is. According to them, BT= Medical. And to them, BT= no scope subject/ no placement. If I am asked, why I am studying BT, I answer it’s because I like it and I have wild dreams about it. But if I am asked,” What is there in BT? Why did you take it?”, then I will say,” because I don’t want to spend my life building drains and toilets, securing nuts and feeding oil to the machines, connecting broken wires, becoming a couch potato or wasting crores of money searching for a new planet while down here, people are dying of starvation and nature is being raped, etc.” The world of biology is yet to be explored and researched. We have scrapped just the surface. If we use our brains, BT and other bio-based subjects have full of scope, starting from producing a vaccine for the simple common cold to the cure for cancer and virus; from agriculture to mining without harming the surrounding, etc. And I can proudly say, your drainage people /screw bearers/ couch potatoes / circuiteers are not going to do it; biologists will do that(no offence). And if you think bio is easy or a girlish subject, then please have a cup of it. I dare you! What I want to say is- respect all the other branches. We need each other. All branches and subjects need one another. Everything has their pros and cons. One is not better than the other. Take a look around and see the research fundings in developed countries. Recently I came across an environmental NGO of India. It hurt me to see that the founder of that NGO blamed Biotechnology for the downfall of agriculture in India and polluting the fields. And the campaign is country wide. And because of such ignorant people, BT is being victimized and wrong notions are being created about it. Dear Biologists everywhere, ignore these ignorant. We do what is right. We must be accurate, precise and patient. We cannot make mistakes because we deal with “LIFE”. Hail life! My best wishes to all the Biologists...
