TODAY IN MARINE CORPS HISTORY: 1779: The USS Bonhomme Richard engages the British frigate Serapis off Flamborough Head, Great Britain. Both ships are badly damaged and more than 250 men are killed and wounded. Serapis strikes her colors after Marines and sailors use grenades and musket fire to sweep the tops and weather decks of the British ship. MARINE CORPS QUOTE: "We have two companies of Marines running rampant all over the northern half of the island, and three Army regiments pinned down in the southwest corner, doing nothing.
