TOI NEWS :-KOLKATA: The West Bengal Public Service Commission (WBPSC) is yet to issue notification for holding the 2014 WBCS (Ex) examination, making candidates anxious that the process might be delayed this year. According to examinees, the notification is usually issued at least three to four months prior to the preliminary WBCS (Ex) examination. Previously, the prelims were held in January or February. Once it was held in April. But since the notification is yet to be issued, officials also feel that the WBPSC will be unable to issue it till the polls are over in May. So, the examinees have to wait till the results are declared because of the model code of conduct. However, Sheikh Nurul Haque, chairman of WBPSC, said they will issue the notification for WBCS (Ex) exam soon. But he refused to mention the date of the examination and that of the notification. It will be uploaded on the WBPSC website and you have to keep track of it, he said. Earlier, it used to take over two years to complete the recruitment process, including the viva-voce. But the state government had asked the WBPSC to hasten the WBCS (Ex) examination process after it was found that several candidates who had qualified for WBCS (Ex) had joined other jobs because of the delay in completing the process. So, there is already a shortage of WBCS (Ex) officers and a delay in processing the examination can worsen the situation, said an official at Nabanna. Moreover, for better assessment of candidates in the interview for WBCS A, B, C and D groups, there will be only one panel and it will assess the candidates and do it in less time. Now, the state government has asked that the recruitment process be completed within a year. But since the state has also asked for a modification of the examination process, the notification for the WBCS (Ex) exam could not be issued sooner, explained a WBPSC official. He said chief minister Mamata Banerjee wanted the English paper to be made easier so that rural candidates do not face much trouble taking the WBCS (Ex) exam. Accordingly, in the new syllabus, the essay has been omitted. Instead, much stress has been given to translations from English to Bengali and vice versa. Moreover, to hasten the examination process, candidates will be able to appear in an optional paper and he or she will be ranked according to the marks taken together. In the preliminary examination, there will be a 200-mark elimination test, which will have multiple choice questions. In the mains, too, there will multiple choice questions for some papers excluding English, Bengali and the optional papers. The optical mark recognition (OMR) sheets will be mechanically assessed, reducing time and solving the problem of inadequate number of examiners. The mains will have six compulsory papers and an optional subject, each carrying 200 marks. Those selected will get the chance to appear in the interview.
