TRAMIN Come winter and it is tram rides time. With Calcutta being the only city in India to have trams, we are muzzling it to its death, rather than reinvent it. In an effor to reinvent and remodel their transport systems, Uralvagonzavod, a Russian design firm, present its new tram RUSSIA ONE. A completely indigenous project, only some of the components- such as the accordion doors and mechanisms are imported. The complete car has been redesigned. The driver now has a crane operator view of 180 degrees. The designers managed to reduce bottom dead zone of about 10-15%. The footrests are made of perforated aluminum, and the traction motors when braking help generate the heat in them for cold Russian winters. This is a huge plus because of the snowy winter on the footboards is formed on the walls, which is very dangerous. The tram is armed with sockets to charge ones phones. The new tram can run up to 50 km on its battery. This means that it can be used as a suburban commuter train as well. The tram is expected to cost about 1million Euros.
