[TRANS] True to his name, From “bad acting” to becoming an “actor”… U-Know Yunho’s history of evolvement in acting For everybody, there will be a black history (ie negative things) which they want to hide. However, what makes one able to smile and surpass that black history is solely at that person’s own discretion. If there are people who are forever confined within that black history and do not show any growth, then conversely that is also because there are also people who show appearances of themselves stamping on that black history and making great improvements. U-Know Yunho of MBC “Journal of Night Watchmen” which concluded its broadcast run not long ago, is an “actor” who is showing the latter side as it is. In the MBC variety programme “Star Gazing” broadcast in July, U-Know Yunho who appeared on the show had conveyed this regarding the negative reviews about his own acting, “I received really a lot of negative comments. However, I think that negative comments are only written because there is interest. For my dancing and singing too, at the start, they received negative reviews. However, as time gradually passed, I received good reviews and because of this, I think that if I work hard at acting too, it will be able to turn out that way too. I ask that people point out my inadequate aspects. I will become an actor who will think hard about and a lot about those aspects and study them and grow”. And as his own words go, he is now no longer about the representative subject of the term “bad acting” but has grown as yet another “actor”. ◇ A burden-less / light start with “Non Stop 4” - “Banjeon Drama” U-Know Yunho, who made his debut through idol group TVXQ in 2003, made his attempt at acting for the first time through 2004 MBC “Non Stop 4”. In reality, the nature of the genre called “sitcoms” did not put much focus on his acting, and because it was a one-off episodes-based appearance, the atmosphere was one whereby one laughed and let it pass. In addition, at that time, U-Know Yunho was the leader of TVXQ, who had been receiving the absolute support of the teens. Because his “idol singer” image was strong compared to that of an “actor”, there was no serious discussion over his acting abilities. In 2005 SBS “Sunday Is Good - Banjeon Drama” and variety programmes, because they were all one-off acting which emphasized “a cool image”, with the extent of just a slight simmering feel, one was able to accept it. ◇ Because these are just watched by fans, “it is okay?” “Vacation” - “Dating on Earth” Even for the theatrical TV drama which was released in 2006, U-Know Yunho’s acting abilities were not cause for issues which would create controversy. In that regard, MBC drama “Heading to the Ground” which was broadcast in 2009 really plummeted to the ground. His acting was labelled “bad acting” and he received negative reviews from the viewers. In particular, the appearance of him in the drama getting angry while watching Park Ji Sung’s commercial and saying “Oh, you’re scowling (frowning)? Do you want to take me on for once? Am I laughable? I’m asking you if I am laughable… Is Manchester United great? Is Manager Ferguson treating you well?” and the scene where he gets outraged after going to the wedding ceremony of his first love etc are scenes which are famous for “bad acting” and which are still being discussed online till now. At that time, “Heading to the Ground” recorded its lowest viewer ratings of 3.7% (Nielsen Korea nationwide standard) and tanked. ◇ Transition period “Poseidon - Yawang” U-Know Yunho, who had become the representative subject of “bad acting” through “Heading to the Ground”, thereafter focused on his singer activities and excluding the special cameo appearance in the movie “Subaru”, he did not have any acting activities like that. This is the period of time where TVXQ’s lawsuit issues were proceeding at a rapid pace. In that period of time, U-Know Yunho gave a cameo appearance in 2011’s “Poseidon”, with his face thereby appearing on the small screens again, and through the role of Baek Do Hon in 2012’s SBS “Yawang”, he returned to the viewers. In the drama, Baek Do Hoon was a young master of a chaebol (tycoon) household who loves Joo Da Hae (Su Ae) and owing to the fact that the proportion of the weight of his role in the drama was not small, the controversy over his acting followed him around like a tag. However, compared to “Heading to the Ground”, at the very least in “Yawang”, U-Know Yunho showed everybody the “Baek Do Hoon” which belonged only to himself. It was a development of making great steps forward in his own way. For the first time, he also surprised viewers to the extent that his acting abilities did not become a hindrance to the watching of the drama. ◇ “Journal of Night Watchmen” whereby he washed himself clean of the “bad acting” negative tag This is a production which allowed U-Know Yunho to finally grab a place as an “actor”. In reality, right till before the first broadcast of this drama, with the heavy substantial genre of “period drama” and the acting controversy which had doggedly followed and tagged him around continuously, the public’s anticipation was almost non-existent. However, once the lid was actually uncovered, U-Know Yunho virtually did not yield to the other lead actors at all (ie on the same level) and displayed acting abilities which were beyond expectations. He received good reviews that he had brought to life and portrayed very well the character of “Moo Seok”, who stands out instead for his cold charms through his low voice and his solemn charisma. In particular, in either the scene where he sobs following the death of his younger sister in the drama, In Hwa, or the scene where he confesses his love to Do Ha, or the scene where he is betrayed by the King which particularly received good reviews for his acting abilities, etc, he received compliments that he had properly and adequately portrayed and brought to life the detailed emotional lines of the character. Although there are still issues such as his pronunciation which still remain, in “Journal of Night Watchmen”, U-Know Yunho showed the possibility of the “actor” known as Jung Yunho. On 21 October, “Journal of Night Watchmen” drew its curtains in 1st place in its timeslot with viewer ratings of 12.5% (Nielsen Korea nationwide standard). However, the “Moo Seok” character acted out by U-Know Yunho, no, the “Moo Seok” character acted out by Jung Yunho, will remain in the minds of the viewers for a long time. Jung Yunho has stripped himself off of the skin “acting controversy” and “idol singer” through his own hard work.
