TREASURE DEVOTION #26 “Therefore, don’t worry and say, ‘What are we going to eat?’ or ‘What are we going to drink’ or ‘What are we going to wear?’ Gentiles long for all these things. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them”. Matthew 6.31-32 Last week I asked the worship team to share with me some hymns about worry and hope. The top five shared included: “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” “His Eye is on the Sparrow,” “Trust and Obey,” “I Surrender All” and “Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus.” The last one I hadn’t thought of for a long time, and I have been humming it randomly ever since. After several days of having done so, and only being able to sing the first line, I googled the lyrics so I could be able to sing the rest of the song. Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, Just to take Him at His Word; Just to rest upon His promise, And to know, “Thus saith the Lord!” Refrain: Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him! How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er; Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! Oh, for grace to trust Him more! Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus, Just from sin and self to cease; Just from Jesus simply taking Life and rest, and joy and peace. I’m so glad I learned to trust Thee, Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend; And I know that Thou art with me, Wilt be with me to the end. Wow, what power and witness to trust in God’s providence and believe fully in the generosity of God’s goodness. We are told that bad things will happen, but through those experiences God will sustain us. What do you think that means? Can you think of a time when God’s grace sustained you? “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.” Psalm 55:22. Louisa M. Stead, the composer of this hymn, knew something about the bad things that can happen and how God’s grace sustains. Attached is a link that shares the tragic circumstances behind her having composed it. Prayer: Indeed, “tis so sweet” to trust in you Jesus, Savior, Friend. Help us to come to the point that in all things we can trust in your tender loving care. Open our hearts with thanksgiving to the gifts you bestow and help us to realize that these are not for us to store away for ourselves, but these gifts are given to care for our needs and for the needs of others. Amen.
