TRES LAGUNAS FIRE UPDATE Saturday, June 8, 2013, 10 p.m. Fire Information: 505-757-2952 Media Contact: 505-757-2907 Information for this fire, including maps and photos, can be found at: inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/3401 Acres: 10,048 Cause: Human Start Date: May 30, 2013 Containment: 45% Location: 10 miles North of Pecos, NM Fuels: Timber Total personnel: 1,014 Terrain: steep, rugged Today’s Summary: Progress moved ahead today from containment to mop up and rehabilitation of completed fire lines in the north, west and south areas of the fire. Mop up entails detailed inspection of fire lines to be sure the ground is cold and fire perimeter is secure. On parts of the northeast and east fire perimeter, efforts were aimed at expanding and securing containment lines. Firefighters continued to strengthen lines around the spot fires in Holy Ghost Canyon and the cluster of spot fires on the east side of the fire. Electricity was restored today to all parts of the evacuated areas except Holy Ghost Canyon. Evacuations will be lifted when the area is safe from potential threats to the communities currently evacuated north of Windy Ridge The road block on Highway 63 is located at the Windy Bridge Day Use area at approximately mile marker 15.5. The road south of Windy Bridge is open. Due to heavy fire traffic, please avoid driving on the highway before 8:00 a.m. and after 5:00 p.m. Residents are urged to drive slowly and use extreme caution. Areas north of Windy Bridge remain under evacuation. Forest Road 92 two miles north of the Bull Creek road remains closed. Smoke: Smoke has been minimal for the last few days and that should continue tomorrow. Be Bear Aware: There have been bear sightings reported by firefighters in the area. With area residents returning to their property after a week of power outages, New Mexico Game and Fish advises to be sure not to leave food or garbage of any kind where bears can get to it. Bears that become habituated to human food and garbage are often relocated and frequently don’t survive. Bears are hungry and travelling widely at this time of year. The fire has aggravated the situation. Please be observant and cautious around all wildlife. The team strives to meet or exceed federal and state environmental standards, such as recycling plastic, paper and cardboard.
