TROOP C - NEWS RELEASE June 21, 2014 Unrestrained Driver Killed Yesterday Evening in Assumption Parish Crash Belle Rose, LA- Shortly after 9 PM yesterday evening, a 52 year old Paincourtville man was killed when his vehicle traveled off the road and overturned in Assumption Parish. The investigation revealed that a 2003 Ford pickup truck was traveling south on LA 308 in Belle Rose, LA. The Ford was being driven by Gerald Miles, (B/M age 52) of Paincourtville, LA. For unknown reasons, the truck failed to negotiate a left hand curve on LA 308 and traveled off the right side of the road. Miles overcorrected to the left and began to rotate counter-clockwise as he traveled across LA 308. The truck then traveled off the left side of LA 308 where it struck an embankment and overturned. Miles, who was not wearing a seat belt, was not ejected, but sustained serious injuries and was transported to Prevost Hospital in Donaldsonville, LA. Miles died shortly after his arrival at the hospital from his injuries sustained in the crash. Impairment is suspected to be a factor in the crash. Routine toxicology tests are pending, and this crash remains under investigation. Troopers remind motorists of the dangers of impaired driving. While there have been fewer deaths associated with impaired driving in recent years, there is still much room for improvement. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash. Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
