Take ONE minute today, grab a Craigslist paper and CALL ONE person giving away a free pet to a good home and WARN THEM what may happen. NOTICE TO ALL RESCUES. Over the last week we have seen 3 separate adverts on gumtree from advertisers who are selling the dogs they have "rescued" from dog rehoming centres. We have informed Dogs Trust, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home and Dorset Dog Rescue and all were alarmed to hear that this was happening to dogs which they had rehomed. Additionally we were contacted by Foal Farm Animal Rescue Centre who had also been alerted to the fact that a couple of their rehomed cats were also recently being advertised on internet selling sites. The cats are now safe. These cases must be the tip of a largely invisible iceberg which means that many rescued animals may be finding themselves in bad situations again should they end up in the wrong hands. Are your adoption contracts making it absolutely clear that you will take back an animal should the new owners not be able to keep them? Are you doing enough follow up checks to make sure the animals you have rehomed are still in the care of the people who adopted them? So much hard work and care goes into the rescue and rehabilitation of these animals but it can only be worth it if you know that you are finding them safe "forever" homes. Please share this info with as many rescue groups as you can.
