Taking possession of Bluenose II proves to be another incompetent Liberal decision: MacFarlane PC MLA to Premier: Answer warranty questions and tell taxpayers if they’ll be paying even more HALIFAX, NS – Progressive Conservative Tourism critic Karla MacFarlane says the government’s decision to bring the Bluenose II into taxpayers’ possession only days after receiving a damning report that identified 57 problems with the vessel is another example of incompetent Liberal decision-making. “The Liberals knew full well the many problems with the vessel, but they still irresponsibly decided to put taxpayers on the hook for it,” said MacFarlane. “When it comes to the Bluenose II restoration, the Liberals never fail to miss an opportunity to showcase their incompetence.” Yesterday, a copy of the vessel’s latest inspection report was released. While the Liberals have maintained the problems with the ship’s rudder have been largely responsible for the delay, the report identifies dozens of other problems including leaking pipes, poorly stepped masts, and ventilation issues. When the Liberals took possession of the vessel last week MacFarlane, and the Progressive Conservatives expressed concern about the lack of information provided to taxpayers. She says the contents of the inspection report proves those concerns were valid. According to the ship builder’s contract, which was already violated when the Liberals took possession of the vessel before deficiencies were repaired, a one-year warranty is included to address outstanding issues. Premier McNeil and his top Bluenose II guru, Deputy Minister David Darrow, did not speak to reporters yesterday, so whether the problems listed in the inspection report will be covered by the warranty or included with the ship’s already multimillion dollar bill is unclear. “The Premier must come out of hiding and give taxpayers the answers they deserve,” said MacFarlane. “Someone needs to be held accountable for all this Liberal mismanagement and we won’t rest until these important questions are answered.”
