Tasted blind: Chateau Haut-Bergey, Pessac- Léognan, 2009 (see also tasting note from 9. March, 2014) 91/100 22. March, 2014 I gave Malin (my wife) the keys to the wine-cellar (a section of it at least), and told her to grab a random bottle without letting me knowwhat she had picked prior to drinking it. Rather anxious about what she had chosen (I have a couple of long-term savers), I blind-tasted the wine and gave my notes and score without knowing what was in the glass. Here are the notes: Deep dark ruby colour. Aromatically the nose is ripe yet elegant reminding me of Central Italy with its medicin nose, sour-kirch, beef jerky and licquorice. The palate offers deep dark fruits with a masculine structure and a decent acidity. Flavours that come to mind are forest fruits, green pepper (Cabernet Franc?), salty licquorice, and spices. The finish is long with notes of dark chocolate. The tannins are rather grippy with a promise of a long future ahead, as this wine will undoubtfully gain more complexity with further ageing. My initial guess was Italy - maybe Chianti Classico, Castello di Brolio, 2006. But with air and further decanting I got more confused: Further guesses went from modern Spanish Tempranillo to Austrian Blaufränkich. When I found out that the wine was Haut-Bergey, 2009, which I had rated less than two weeks ago, I was amazed. This only shows how desceptive wine and wine-tasting can be. Our brains work in an anticipatory manner prospectively constructing on-going experience. So when I tasted this wine two weeks ago knowing it came form Pessac-Léognan, I was probably (uncosnciously) looking for region-specific notes. This tasting only shows how subjective, biased, and even arbitrary wine tasting is, and essentially how stupid it is to listen to wine crtitcs ;-) https://facebook/photo.php?fbid=10153888293085304&set=gm.10151997617201725&type=1
