Technology/ Technical subject stream for GCE A/L Apr 16, 20132 Commentsby Hiran If you are sitting for the Advanced Level A/L Examinations in 2015, then you have an option of selecting a new stream of study: technological subject stream, according to Education Minister. Presently, the GCE (A/L) students learn in Physical Science, Biological Science, Commerce and Arts subject streams. The proposed stream will include technical subjects such as information technology, electronics, civil and mechanical engineering, agriculture, bio-resources and food sciences to give the students a practical knowledge in preparation for employment after school education. This was announced at a press conference by Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena. He said that the new stream would be named ‘Technology’ stream, mostly based on skills of students. “We will introduce the new stream in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development,” Gunawardena said adding that the preliminary preparations for the new stream had already been completed. “At the initial stage, the new stream will be available at 50 schools and gradually expanded to cover every secretariat division. The Education Ministry is drafting the text books and teacher guidance for the new stream with the assistance of educationalists, intellectuals and several other resource personnel,” Education Minister Banduala Gunawardena said. Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa, Vidya Jothi Professor Dayantha Wijeyesekera was also present at the briefing, who explained the benefits of the new stream of study. “The subjects include electronics, civil and mechanical engineering, agriculture as well as food sciences and information technology,” he said, adding that enrollment in universities would not be necessary, if this stream of study was followed at A Levels, as students would acquire a very practical knowledge, which would enable them to find employment easily. However still (2013 April) when we checked the website of National Institute of Education, they have not published relevant syllabuses. Also these subjects are still not recognized by Sri Lankan University system for selection of students to University courses.
