Technology...its the biggest gift to families who are fighting a chronic disease. For us...it has been life changing...and has given us so much hope. The CGM is something I dont know what we did before we had it. It, along with Apollo, has caught highs and lows before theyve reached critical levels. We have been able to adjust basals...insulin sensitivity and carb ratios due to what we see trending on his CGM. Having said all of that, technology is not perfect. It can fail just like any other device. This is a pic of Rys overnight/daytime numbers. It looks pretty awful. The first issue is that his highs shown here werent as high as the peak shown here. After Ry tested, his actual blood sugar was 40-50 points off. Do you see the blank areas at the low end of the graph between midnight and 6am? The CGM showed that he was out of range. Ry has to be within 20ft of the CGM for it to register the readings. It was in the same place all night. Im not sure if Riley slept on it weird or there was a glitch, we are trying to figure it out with Dexcom. Regardless, it was Apollo last night who got up from his Kuranda, jumped on Rys bed, and laid by him whining and whimpering that woke me up. Due to the camera we have set up in his room, I first heard Apollo stirring, and then the whining as he laid on his bed. I knew he was alerting. When I walked in, Ry was trying to wake up. I looked at his CGM and saw that it stopped registering and it indicated that it was out of range. I didnt hear the first low blood sugar alarm before it went offline. At this point, Ry was moaning and as I grabbed his hand to test, he was clammy...I knew he was either really low or going down fast. I tested...he was 60. Apollo was pawing at him the whole time. We treated the low...it took awhile to get him above 100. Apollo wouldnt leave him. Bottom line...dont rely on technology or a DAD solely to watch your T1 child. This is why I continue to test during the night....because nothing is 100%. Praising God that Apollo came out of his deep sleep (it seems to be between the hours of 12am-2am) to alert. Weve been really working on that with him!! He saved my boy last night....hes our angel.
