Tension continues to grow between the law enforcement community, those who support them, and those who feel that recent incidents between police and civilians were inappropriately handled. Locally and across this country there are those that feel they have concerns and want to be heard about inappropriate law enforcement conduct. In response, those in law enforcement and those who support them have begun to express themselves with their concerns about the issues. With this in mind, I cannot get behind the “breath” T-shirts on either side. I support (and will defend) everyone’s right to wear them, or to express their concerns in a peaceful manner. Those shirts being produced by supporters of officers are making improper inferences and this will not accomplish our mission to serve our community. These shirts tarnish the memory of those who gave all for the people they serve. We owe it to the many officers that have fallen to work out these issues in a productive manner. Law enforcement is here to serve our community and do so by working with them, listening to their concerns and adjusting to their needs. There are many law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty protecting their communities, serving by giving the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives to protect the rights of all, including the wearing of whatever T-shirt they desire and say whatever is on their minds.
