Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Your love and kindness has been such a gift to my family and me! Thank you! Its been ten days since the bilateral mastectomy and this is my first status update. Mostly because I was too drugged, blurry-eyed, in pain and/or sleepy to make much sense...Im hoping Im doing better but Ill leave you to judge if I am coherent….well, coherent enough for the internet anyway. So this is the thing...my breasts are gone. I know that sounds like an obvious conclusion to a bilateral mastectomy but nonetheless, once the deed is done. Its done. Really...really done. It took me days before I could look at myself in the mirror. Partly because of the spectacle of a science project that was going on with tubes sticking out and gauze and sutures and bruising. Partly because they inserted expanders between my ribs and muscles, which I still find the concept unsettling. And partly because...well...part of my body is missing. And that is nothing short of bizarre on a good day. Chemotherapy is still a possibility. We are waiting for test results to come back. I’ll do what they tell me to do. Basically, I’ll die of something someday….but it won’t be of this if I can at all help it. You may see me out walking like I’m a 90 year old and holding onto someone’s arm (usually Emma’s or Mick’s). But I have to walk everyday if I’m going to get up those mountains again. And so it goes…. Love to you all!
