Thank you for the early happy birthday welcome and I will enjoy my birthday on the 6th as well. My daughter and family and friends celebrated by taking me out to dinner last night. I enjoyed opening my gifts and cards. The highlight of the evening was when I opened my daughters gift to me as she also paid for my supper as well. She found a book that told about the occupation of Guernsey (the island I was born on) and how the islanders faired under the German invasion of their homes and lives. I am reading it now and I am amazed at the strength and endurance of the people. Imagine being isolated and cut off completely from the outside world. The invaders cut off all contact with England and even the other islands close to them. Not a letter both in and out was allowed. No radio, boat or supplies were interchanged and they heard nothing about their children that they had sent to safety in England. The occupation of Guernsey took 5 years and the people existed on potatoes, rice, turnips, tomatoes and whatever the soldiers allowed them. Very little meat was allowed and they were given two candles a week for lighting the stove and allowing them to see going to bed. The Germans changed curfew when ever they wanted and if you were caught outside; you could be punished and jailed or sent to a work camp even returned to Germany to be questioned. It was terrifying for those that had to endure those 5 years. The book that consists of letters between a lady author and the many people of Guernsey has a rather unusual title but that is explained in the book.
