Thanks for all the good thoughts and prayers for Gus, you guys. Most of you following Gus’ saga were supporting him because you know he’s my fella, the photo on my desk or on Facebook, and you know that we’ve been together forever. Those of you who have met Gus know it’s more. Have you ever had a friend, co-worker, colleague, or relative who had such a joie de vivre, he annoyed you? That’s Gus. For those of you who have never met him, Gus is a 25-pound beagle-chihuahua mix. He has a vocabulary of about 100 words and will pee on the porch if there’s dew in the yard because he doesn’t like his feet wet, but he eats poo. He’ll bark when someone rings a doorbell on TV, but shows no interest in it otherwise. He knows the difference between eyeliner and mascara (the former means I’m coming home soon, the latter means a longer time away) and whines like he’s dying whenever I walk out the door. He sleeps only because the rest of the world does. To this day, I think he closes his eyes and just lies there until someone else stirs. Then, he’s ready to start the day. Until last week, Bill joked that Gus’ motto is, “I’ll sleep when I die. Let’s go.” At 12 years old, he loves eating, scratching, hunting, running (especially running), sniffing butts, figuring out anything. When his humans take to the porch to chat, he claims a chair just inside the kitchen, where he can see outside, inside and out the front door. He pushes every life experience to the limit. Last week I realized, even though I intellectually knew it, that there is a limit to every life, even one like Gus’. He reminded me that we can (and SHOULD) live each day to the fullest. Tomorrow, things may stink, but they also will smell interesting. Something MAY happen today, so make sure you have a prime spot to see it. And, even if you know your loved one is coming home, every time he leaves, you should howl and scream just to make sure he knows you love him. Lord, thank you so much for sending me this friend. And thank you for giving me a few more weeks, months, or years with him.
